BBC News: Fathers’ depression ‘harms young’

There’s an new article in that cites a new Oxford study that states that too much focus has been placed on mothers’ mental health issues and that fathers’ mental health state is more influential to children than previously thought (The Oxford study is in The Lancet; looks like this study is a few years old, though).

The article is pretty interesting and advocates better mental health services for men. There are some stats in there about the effects that mental health of parents have on the rate of mental illness in their offspring. What the article (or maybe this study) never mentions is that there’s a huge genetic component to mental illness. Is it that much of a surprise that a kid whose parents are afflicted by these health issues may inherit those traits as well? Of course the environment matters, but this heredity portion should hardly be neglected.
