There’s a new drug in town. Saphris (asenaphine), an atypical antipsychotic made by Schering-Plough has been approved for treatment of schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. Like most mental-health drugs, Saphris comes with all the potential side effects, such as weight gain. But it’s a new option!

  1. I somehow came across your blog in doing research for my sister, who has been struggling through lots of trial and error medication therapy for what her psychiatrist now thinks is bipolar disorder (treated for years for depression only). I recently went with her to an appt. and asked her doctor about ECT. He wants to hold off unless she becomes actively suicidal. She’s not, but thinks about death much of the time. It really sucks. I just wanted to let you know that I think your blog is smart, educational and asks all the right questions. I wish you all the best in your continuing recovery. I also have suffered from depression – plan to stay on my meds for the duration!!
