The Daily Routine

Some people run
on the treadmill.
Do the crossword puzzle.
Drink their morning coffee.
Governed by our
daily routines, our habits.
Some out of pleasure but most,
out of necessity.

I take pills.
A simple task, really.
A glass of water in one hand and
a quick toss of those tablets
into the mouth. This daily act,
performed for a reason, though
those reasons
I sometimes forget.

I recall when
those necessarily tasks
became optional:
to laugh,
to bathe,
to wake up.
Soon, what became optional was for me
to stay alive.

I’m greeted by
a rainbow of chemistry and
remember why they’re
in my hand.
I take those pills
to live.
That’s my
daily routine.
