Rewriting the future

Paul Simon is releasing a song from his awesome new album “So Beautiful or So What” titled “Rewrite.” (Above is a video of the entire song, if you’d like to hear it). It’s a catchy little tune, but like most Paul Simon songs, it makes you think. Here’s the first verse:

I’ve been working on my rewrite, that’s right
I’m gonna change the ending
Gonna throw away my title
And toss it in the trash
Every minute after midnight
All the time I’m spending
It’s just for working on my rewrite
Gonna turn it into cash

It’s easy to get ourselves bogged down in thinking about what we did or didn’t do in the past, both with days that are long gone and ones like just yesterday. We tend to wish to ourselves that we could somehow change what has already been done. I think we sometimes see our lives as if we are following some sort of a script, as if the words on that script cannot be changed. But this song reminds us that our life script is yet to be finished; we can still ‘rewrite’ it.

By the way, if you want to hear his whole album, go to this link.
